Danish TSO Energinet has partnered with Siemens Energy to expand the power grid in Western Denmark. This eight-year framework agreement will involve the construction of approximately 50 new 150kV high-voltage substations in Jutland and on Funen to accommodate the increasing electricity generation from wind and solar power by 2030.
As Denmark aims to quadruple its renewable energy capacity by 2030, Energinet must also support the growing demand for electricity due to the shift towards electric vehicles and heat pumps. This will require converting solar and wind power into hydrogen and green fuels for shipping and industry.
Siemens Energy won the contract after competing with three other companies. The exact locations for the new substations will depend on the distribution of renewable energy sources in the region. The agreement, worth approximately DKK10.5 billion, enables Siemens Energy to plan its capacities to meet the accelerating grid investments in Europe and worldwide.
Energinet has cancelled other tenders for the expansion of high-voltage substations in Eastern Denmark and cable laying throughout the country due to increased global prices and uncertainties in partnerships. The company believes that by focusing on the agreement with Siemens Energy in Western Denmark, they can dedicate more resources to projects in Eastern Denmark and adapt the delivery model to achieve the necessary progress for the green transition.
