SP Energy Networks purchases innovative power solution for grid balancing

1. Hitachi Energy won an order from SP Energy Networks to design and deliver a power quality solution to boost renewable energy flow in the UK.

Hitachi Energy has secured an order from SP Energy Networks to develop and implement a cutting-edge power quality solution to enhance grid stability and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources in the UK. This groundbreaking solution will allow SP Energy Networks to accommodate up to 280MW of additional renewable energy, potentially powering over 360,000 homes.

The project, based at SP Energy Networks’ Eccles substation, consists of two sets of an SVC Light STATCOM and a synchronous condenser controlled centrally by the MACH control system, all connected at a common electrical node. This configuration enables the generation or absorption of reactive power to regulate grid voltage and enhance system resilience.

Each STATCOM unit is equipped with Hitachi Energy’s MACH control and protection system, which provides instantaneous voltage control, strengthens the system, and maximizes power flow. This initiative aligns with SP Energy Networks’ commitment to investing in innovative technologies to foster clean energy transmission and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The collaboration between SP Energy Networks and Hitachi Energy underscores a shared commitment to advancing grid functionality and overcoming challenges related to the energy transition. This latest project follows an earlier successful partnership on the Phoenix network innovation competition, demonstrating the ongoing collaboration and innovation in the energy sector.
