– The DOE will grant $750m to projects across 24 states to produce and use clean hydrogen
– Green hydrogen is made by splitting water using zero-emissions sources like solar and wind power
– The grants will help the US meet its National Clean Hydrogen Strategy goals and support the $7bn hydrogen hub program.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) will provide $750 million in grants to projects in 24 states focused on producing and using clean hydrogen to reduce fossil fuel dependency and cut emissions in industries like aluminum and cement. Green hydrogen, produced using zero-emissions sources like solar or wind power, is a key focus to drive down costs and increase demand for the technology.
Currently, most hydrogen is produced using fossil fuels, but the DOE grants aim to support research on clean hydrogen production methods through electrolysers. The 52 projects receiving funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law cover various aspects of the hydrogen industry, including materials recycling and supply chain security for hydrogen production equipment.
The DOE’s hydrogen and fuel cell technologies office head, Sunita Satyapal, believes the grants signify a holistic approach to meeting clean hydrogen production goals. US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm emphasized that these projects, along with the administration’s $7 billion hydrogen hub program, will position the US as a leader in clean hydrogen production with long-lasting impacts on the nation’s energy landscape. President Biden, in an earlier announcement, hailed the hydrogen hub construction proposals as a significant manufacturing investment for the country.
