Several major battery energy storage system (BESS) projects have been developed in the UK recently. The 50MW ‘Camilla’ BESS in Fife, Scotland, connected to the grid in December 2023 and secured a contract in the Capacity Market Auction. Another project in Uskmouth, South Wales, a 230MW/460MWh BESS, is being developed through a partnership between Quinbrook and E.ON and is expected to support around 140 jobs.

In Scotland, the 49MW/98MWh Jamesfield BESS has gone live, using Tesla batteries and Autobidder AI software. This project is a joint venture between TagEnergy and Harmony Energy. Additionally, RWE has started constructing seven solar and storage sites in the UK, with a total capacity of 330MW of solar and 45MW of co-located BESS. These projects are part of RWE’s acquisition of developer JBM Solar and will contribute towards local communities in the area.
