Mike Krieger, co-founder of Instagram and Artifact, has joined Anthropic as the company’s first chief product officer. In his new role, he will oversee product engineering, management, and design efforts as Anthropic expands its suite of AI apps and introduces Claude, its generative AI technology, to a wider audience. Krieger will also be responsible for enterprise services, subscriptions, and software at Anthropic.

Krieger praised Anthropic for its focus on building trustworthy AI systems that empower humans and expand technological possibilities. He expressed excitement to work with the team at Anthropic to design and scale transformative products like Claude, believing in the potential for AI to positively impact the world. CEO Dario Amodei described Krieger as a world-class engineer, builder, and leader, highlighting his expertise in developing intuitive products and user experiences.

Krieger, who left Instagram in 2018, co-founded Artifact in 2023 with Kevin Systrom to develop recommender systems for news aggregation and curation. After being acquired by Yahoo!, Krieger continued in an advisory capacity until joining Anthropic. His hiring follows recent advancements in AI chatbot technology by rivals like OpenAI and Google, indicating Anthropic’s intention to compete aggressively in the consumer market with Krieger’s leadership.
