Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign discovered that AI agents powered by GPT-4 can autonomously exploit cybersecurity vulnerabilities. As AI models like GPT-4 become more advanced, they can be used for both good and malicious purposes. The researchers conducted an experiment testing the capability of AI agents to exploit identified “one-day” vulnerabilities, which are security flaws that have been disclosed but not yet patched by software creators. They found that GPT-4 was able to successfully exploit 87% of the vulnerabilities, while other models and open-source vulnerability scanners failed in their attempts.

Creating an AI agent like the one used in the experiment only required 91 lines of code, making it much cheaper and easier to scale compared to using human experts.
