1. GIGA Storage has secured a permit to construct a 600MW/2.4GWh battery energy storage system in Belgium.
2. The project, known as the GIGA Green Turtle, will be located in Dilsen-Stokkem, eastern Belgium, near a new high-voltage station.
3. Construction is set to begin in 2025, with the project expected to be operational by 2028, contributing to the electricity grid and energy security.
GIGA Storage, a Dutch clean energy company, has received approval to construct a 600MW/2.4GWh battery energy storage system in Belgium. The project, named GIGA Green Turtle, will be located in Dilsen-Stokkem, near a high-voltage station operated by Elia. The site was previously a zinc factory, and GIGA Storage purchased the land from the factory owners. The project will include 20 batteries, transformers, and a planting zone, with construction scheduled to begin in 2025.
The approval of the project will enable GIGA Storage to secure financing for the battery energy storage system. Once operational in 2028, GIGA Green Turtle is expected to store the energy equivalent to what 330,000 families use annually, helping to stabilize electricity prices and decrease dependence on fossil fuel imports. CEO Ruud Nijs highlighted the importance of large-scale energy storage projects in contributing to energy security and stability during the transition to renewable energy. GIGA Storage aims to continue playing a significant role in energy storage by targeting 5GW of installed capacity by 2030.
