Asahi Kasei begins operating hydrogen pilot project in Japan

Asahi Kasei, a Japanese technology company, has opened a new hydrogen plant in Kawasaki, Japan, to accelerate its hydrogen business activities. The plant, which started operation in March 2024, features four 0.8 MW modules as a step towards developing a commercial multi-module 100 MW-class alkaline water electrolysis system for green hydrogen production. The company aims to meet the growing demand in the hydrogen market, with global installed capacity of water electrolyzers expected to reach 300 GW by 2030.

In order to test their new Aqualyzer™ alkaline water electrolyzer under realistic conditions, Asahi Kasei constructed a pilot plant in Kawasaki, which started operation in March 2024. The company plans to combine up to ten modules with a capacity of 10 MW each to create commercial large-scale electrolysis systems capable of up to 100 MW. With four modules currently operational at the pilot plant, Asahi Kasei is gathering data to optimize equipment design and operation methods.

Having extensive experience in large-scale chlor-alkali electrolysis, Asahi Kasei plans to start commercial business activities for its alkaline water electrolyzers in 2025, aiming for a total sales volume of ¥100 billion by 2030. The successful operation of their equipment at the pilot plant in Kawasaki and long-term tests in Fukushima will support the company’s market entry with highly reliable multi-module alkaline water electrolysis equipment. This experience will also contribute to joint feasibility studies for large-scale electrolyzers, such as a 60 MW-class electrolyzer in Malaysia targeted for 2027.
