Bulgaria Launches Tender Process for 1.4GW Renewable Energy Projects and 350MW Battery Energy Storage System

1. First tender with a budget of BGN107.6 million for construction of solar, wind projects, and BESS with 200kW-2MW capacity.
2. Second tender budget of BGN427.5 million for new solar, wind projects and BESS with capacity over 200 kW.
3. Bulgarian government started public consultation on the country’s first renewable energy auction, with Solar Media hosting Energy Storage Summit in September 2024.

Bulgaria is set to finance the construction of solar and wind projects, as well as battery energy storage systems (BESS), through two tenders with budgets of BGN107.6 million and BGN427.5 million respectively. The first tender will fund projects with an installed capacity of 200kW to 2MW, while the second tender will focus on projects with a capacity greater than 200kW. Both tenders aim to build a minimum amount of renewable energy capacity in combination with BESS, with maximum financing amounts set for each project.

The financing for both tenders will cover up to 50% of eligible costs, but with limits on the amount that can be provided per MW of installed BESS capacity. The Bulgarian government initiated a public consultation on the first renewable energy auction in October 2023, signaling its commitment to promoting clean energy development in the country.

In line with these initiatives, Solar Media will host the Energy Storage Summit Central Eastern Europe in Warsaw, Poland on 24-25 September 2024. The event will bring together key stakeholders in the energy sector, including investors, policymakers, developers, utilities, and service providers, to discuss the latest trends and opportunities in energy storage.
