– Zūm announced OUSD will be the first major US school district transitioning to a 100% electrified school bus system with V2G technology.
– Zūm is providing a fleet of 74 electric school buses and bidirectional chargers in Oakland, managed through its AI-enabled technology platform.
– The all-EV fleet will serve as a Virtual Power Plant, giving 2.1GWh of energy back to the grid annually, with partners including PG&E and state programs accelerating the project.
Zūm, a transportation solutions provider, has partnered with the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) to transition to a 100% electrified school bus system with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. This initiative will involve a fleet of 74 electric school buses managed through Zūm’s AI-enabled technology platform, providing 2.1GWh of energy back to the grid annually.
Oakland Unified School District believes that transitioning to an all-electric school bus fleet will benefit the community and students by reducing pollution and providing a quieter and cleaner transportation option. This project was made possible with the support of various federal and California State programs that were critical for its acceleration, including the Clean School Bus program and the Heavy Vehicle Incentive Program.
Zūm aims to electrify 10,000 bidirectional school buses, potentially supplying 300GWh of energy to power grids annually, with plans to electrify school buses in other districts as well. Additionally, projects led by companies like The Mobility House and BorgWarner are receiving grants to implement V2G solutions for school districts in California, leveraging the benefits of bidirectional chargers and electric buses for grid support during emergencies.
