Construction Begins on 2GW Offshore Solar Farm by China’s CNNC

The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has started constructing the country’s largest offshore solar farm in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, with a capacity of 2GW and an investment of $1.39bn. This project is expected to save 680,000 tonnes of standard coal annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.77 million tonnes. It is part of China’s efforts to increase clean and renewable energy generation in its coastal provinces.

Situated near the Tianwan nuclear power plant, this solar farm is the largest sea-based solar farm in China, covering 1,868 hectares of sea area. By utilizing the warm seawater area designated for the nuclear plant’s discharge, this project promotes the integrated use of marine resources. The offshore and onshore sections of the project include solar power generation systems, with electricity transmitted to an onshore substation through an overhead corridor bridge.

The project aims to connect to the state grid by September 2024 and reach full capacity by 2025. Over its 25-year lifespan, the solar farm is projected to produce 2.234 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually, meeting the needs of 230,000 people. This project serves as a significant demonstration of offshore solar power generation and is strategically located near high-demand electricity markets in China’s rapidly developing coastal regions.
