German electric utility EnBW has begun construction on the He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the North Sea, set to be Germany’s largest offshore wind farm upon completion. This €2.4bn project will feature 64 Vestas wind turbines and employ over 500 workers during peak construction periods. Transportation of monopiles and transition pieces for the project is being done from Eemshaven in the Netherlands. The wind farm, located off the coast of Borkum and Helgoland, is expected to be operational by the end of 2025. TenneT will connect the wind farm to the grid with an offshore converter station and high-voltage DC export cables. EnBW plans to invest €40bn in the energy transition by 2030, aiming to be climate-neutral by 2035. A consortium holds a 49.9% stake in the project. Maintenance for the wind farm will be conducted from a service base in Emden, and it will supply electricity to approximately 1.1 million households.
