US-based Evergreen Waste Services has received the first of five ordered Mack LR Electric models. The company plans to use bi-directional charging, pushing power back to the grid during peak hours. This makes it the first fully electric Class 8 refuse vehicle in Delaware, with plans to operate in New Castle County.
Evergreen Waste Services received grant money through the Delaware Mitigation Plan, allowing them to purchase four more LR Electric vehicles to add to their fleet of 50 vehicles. The LR Electric has a 376kWh total battery capacity, twin electric motors, and a two-stage regenerative braking system to recapture energy from stops.
The company will utilize a vehicle-to-grid system, bringing the LR Electric back to the site with reduced battery life and sending power back during peak hours. Charging will occur during off-peak hours. The goal is for the vehicle to handle 600 stops and return to the yard, saving money on diesel and maintenance.
If successful, the LR Electric purchase will be a homerun for Evergreen Waste Services. The company aims to discharge energy back to the grid and receive credits, making the vehicles even more cost-effective. With bi-directional charging and a focus on sustainability, Evergreen Waste is leading the way in electrification within the waste management industry.
