StoreDot, an Israeli battery maker, recently demonstrated its silicon-dominant EV battery technology in a prototype Polestar electric car, achieving charging rates of over 310 kW. The company was able to charge the car’s 77 kWh battery from 10% to 82% in just 10 minutes, showcasing the potential for faster EV charging. StoreDot’s XFC cells monitored all parameters throughout the process, maintaining stability and maturity of the technology.
The use of silicon in the battery anode can simplify and reduce the cost of battery production, making it more environmentally friendly. Silicon-based batteries also offer the advantage of being easier to source domestically in North America. StoreDot’s modular battery packs can be integrated into existing EV designs, utilizing current charging infrastructure.
StoreDot aims to have production-ready XFC cells this year, with the goal of charging 100 miles in 5 minutes. They plan to further reduce charging times to 100 miles in 4 minutes by 2026 and 3 minutes by 2028. The successful demonstration with Polestar’s prototype represents a significant advancement in electric mobility technology, paving the way for faster adoption of EVs and reducing range anxiety for drivers.
