Electric vehicles dominate Norwegian market with 91.0% share, Volvo EX30 leads in sales

1. Plugin EVs took a 91.0% share in the auto market in Norway in April.
2. BEVs alone accounted for 89.4% of the auto market share in April.
3. The Volvo EX30 was the best-selling BEV in April, with 1,095 units sold.

The auto market in Norway saw plugin EVs take a 91.0% share in April, with BEVs alone accounting for 89.4% of the market. The best-selling BEV in April was the Volvo EX30. The policy changes from January 1st have limited PHEV sales, boosting BEV sales instead. However, HEVs are now selling more than PHEVs, which is not ideal as PHEVs can run on electricity alone most of the time.

The Volvo EX30, priced competitively against popular models like the Hyundai Kona, has seen a rapid rise in sales since its launch in January. The Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.3 also performed well in April. Two new BYD models, the Seal and Dolphin, entered the Norwegian market in April. The Tesla Model Y remains dominant in Norway, with the Volvo EX30 quickly rising to second place.

Norway’s fleet transition to plugins is slowing due to economic factors affecting the auto market. The overall plugin share grew marginally in Q1 2024, in contrast to previous years. The outlook for Norway’s EV progress towards the aspirational goal of 100% zero emission by 2025 depends on economic recovery and potential policy changes.
