FlexGen will be deploying energy storage solutions in the Yabucoa Municipality of Puerto Rico in partnership with the YFN Yabucoa Solar Project. The company’s HybridOS energy management system will provide reliability and flexibility to the local grid, meeting the strict grid specifications set by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority.
The CEO of FlexGen, Kelcy Pegler, emphasized the importance of energy storage in supporting Puerto Rico with extreme weather events and improving grid reliability. The island has been working to rebuild and enhance the resiliency of its energy sector following the devastation caused by hurricanes in 2017 and a 2020 earthquake, which damaged a significant portion of its grid infrastructure.
Arclight, a US-based independent power producer, has also shown a commitment to deploying battery energy storage systems (BESS). The company launched Infinigen Renewables with a $400 million capital commitment to develop and operate renewable assets, and last year, it launched a separate BESS developer called Elevate.
These projects contribute to Puerto Rico’s efforts to increase the use of renewable energy sources and build a more resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure. This includes grid-scale solar and storage projects by various companies, as well as initiatives like home battery virtual power plants to enhance the island’s energy security and reliability.
