Koehler Paper and steel producer Badische Stahlwerke (BSW) are collaborating with the Rhine port of Kehl to explore the feasibility of generating wind energy at port facilities. The joint feasibility study aims to determine if a wind power plant can be built at the Rhine port of Kehl to provide operational energy for the two companies’ sites in Kehl. Rising energy costs in Germany present a significant challenge for energy-intensive companies like Koehler Paper and Badische Stahlwerke, highlighting the need for renewable energy sources. The study, scheduled to conclude in summer 2025, will assess the potential for constructing a wind power plant to meet the companies’ energy demands and contribute to CO2-neutral steel production. Andreas Volkert from Badische Stahlwerke emphasized the importance of securing a sustainable energy supply and reducing emissions in line with climate goals. The study also includes an evaluation of noise emissions, economic viability, and environmental impacts, with wind measurements set to begin soon. If successful, the project could lead to the construction of a wind power plant by the end of 2025, supporting the companies’ sustainability efforts and energy transition.
