New York introduces 42.5MW of Battery Energy Storage Systems as direct replacement for natural gas

1. Governor Kathy Hochul announced construction of a 12MW solar carport and 7.5MW BESS unit at JFK airport by Port Authority and NY Power Authority.

2. New York state targets 6GW of energy storage by 2030 through grid-scale projects and smaller commercial, industrial, and residential projects.

3. NYCIDA approves 5-15MW projects on Staten Island, including a 15.1MW system by Elevate Renewables and two 5MW projects by Soltage in Queens.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the construction of a 12MW solar carport and 7.5MW BESS unit at JFK airport by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the New York Power Authority. New York state aims to achieve 6GW of energy storage by 2030 through grid-scale projects over 5MW and smaller commercial and industrial or community-scale projects below 5MW. NYCIDA approved 5-15MW projects, including two community-scale BESS projects by NineDot Energy and a 15.1MW system by Elevate Renewables. Soltage will deploy two 5MW/20MWh BESS projects in Queens.

The NYCIDA is providing tax benefits to reduce the capital cost of the projects, which can also be utilized for EV freight charging and other clean energy applications. The projects will also benefit from federal investment tax credits for clean energy. BESS technology in New York has faced challenges due to fire safety concerns, prompting Governor Hochul to establish a working group to address the issue in the state.

The Port Authority is working with TotalEnergies to build and operate the solar and storage project at JFK airport, with a goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The project will be completed in two phases by 2025, with the addition of 6MW of community solar in the second phase to serve Con Edison’s grid.
