NGK to provide 230MWh sodium-sulfur battery storage for eco-friendly hydrogen plant in Germany

1. BASF Stationary Energy Storage placed an order for NAS batteries with NGK, marking BASF’s entry into the energy market.

BASF Stationary Energy Storage, a subsidiary of BASF, has placed an order for high-temperature NAS batteries from NGK as part of their partnership to enter the energy market. The project is still in the planning stage and the initial order includes batteries with a maximum output of 18MW and 104.4MWh capacity, with plans for a total of 230MWh.
NAS battery technology has been on the market for over 20 years, suitable for energy storage applications lasting between four to eight hours with a long lifetime and high cycle count. Each containerized unit can discharge up to 250kW output and stack individual battery cells.
These batteries have been used for various applications, including renewable energy integration, backup power supply, and green hydrogen production. HH2E, a CO2-free hydrogen production company, is developing a hydrogen plant in northern Germany using renewable energy and aims to leverage wind resources and nearby industrial demand.
HH2E was founded by Alex Voigt, previously in the solar industry and CEO of energy storage company Younicos before founding Lumenion and the hydrogen company in 2021. At the Green Hydrogen Summit Europe, there was discussion on the need to “rewire” the market to support hydrogen adoption for decarbonization in the EU, with input from energy transition advisory Hazel New Energy.
