Scotland Approves Green Volt Floating Offshore Wind Project

– Green Volt will have up to 35 floating wind turbines
– Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy secured offshore planning approval for the project in Scotland
– The project aims to integrate renewable energy production with existing offshore oil and gas operations

Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy have received offshore planning approval for their 560MW Green Volt floating offshore wind project in Scotland. This project is set to become the first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in Europe, with up to 35 floating wind turbines expected to be operational by 2029. The project aims to integrate renewable energy production with existing offshore oil and gas operations, providing renewable electricity directly to oil and gas platforms and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Green Volt has the potential to contribute to the UK’s electricity grid and cut carbon emissions by one million tonnes per year.

The partners secured exclusivity agreements for Green Volt and the 1.4GW Cenos floating offshore wind farms as part of Crown Estate Scotland’s leasing round. Scotland’s commitment to investing in offshore wind technology supports the growth of the sector and positions the country as a leader in renewable energy development. Vårgrønn CEO highlighted the significance of achieving offshore consent for Green Volt, stating that it marks an important moment for the offshore wind industry and demonstrates Scotland’s potential to lead in developing new technology and creating a new industry with job opportunities.
