Selecting a Provider for 2,400MWh Belgium BESS from Giga Storage

1. Construction on Green Turtle to start in 2025 and finish in 2028, making it one of the largest BESS projects in Europe.
2. Giga Storage has delayed construction due to better understanding of supply chain and building contracts, and is in the process of selecting a BESS supplier.
3. Giga Storage also building Giraffe project in the Netherlands with a capacity of 45MWh and power output of 10MW, to be completed in 2025 to provide reserve capacity on the transport network.

Construction on the Green Turtle battery energy storage system (BESS) in Europe is scheduled to begin in 2025, with completion expected in 2028. Giga Storage, the company behind the project, initially announced a different start date for construction but delayed it to better understand the supply chain and building contracts. The company is currently in the process of selecting a BESS supplier.

The Green Turtle project will be built on the site of a former zinc factory and will involve the construction of a new substation by transmission system operator Elia. Once operational, the BESS will be commercialised by trading the batteries in energy markets and renting out energy storage capacity. Giga Storage has also appointed Mott MacDonald to provide engineering and advisory services for the Leopard Project, another large-scale BESS project in Belgium.

In addition to the Green Turtle project, Giga Storage will also begin building the Giraffe project in the Netherlands this summer. The Giraffe project will have an energy storage capacity of 45MWh and a power output of 10MW, aimed at providing reserve capacity on the transport network in the region. Despite challenges in the Dutch market, such as grid, market revenues, and local permitting, there are efforts to support the growth of energy storage through operating subsidies.
