Sungrow anticipates significant growth in the Spanish energy storage market

Sungrow recently hosted an event in Madrid to introduce its latest energy storage system, PowerTitan 2.0, to the European market, with plans to deploy 200MWh of systems in the UK and Germany this year. The Spanish market has been slower to adopt energy storage, with a lack of specific regulations and a capacity market hindering growth. Last year, Spain only added 5MW/10MWh of capacity, but a kickstart in deployment is expected by 2025.

Spain’s first tender for energy storage projects co-located with renewables awarded 1.8GWh of capacity, with projects expected to be smaller in size. However, an upcoming 2.4GWh standalone energy storage tender could lead to larger projects. Sungrow’s vice-president for Southern Europe emphasized the importance of clear regulations for the growth of energy storage in Spain.

Challenges for the growth of energy storage in Spain include grid congestion, lack of personnel with specialized knowledge, and the unpredictability of subsidies from Europe. Long-duration energy storage systems could help alleviate economic curtailment of renewable energy generation in the country. Despite these challenges, there is optimism that Spain could reach 22GW of energy storage by 2030 with the right policies and investments.
