UK Power Networks’ Technical Limits scheme has allowed almost 1GW of new energy generation projects to accept fast-track offers to connect to the electricity network. This initiative, in collaboration with the national system operator and other distribution networks, is cutting years off the time for projects to connect, with 25 projects totaling 836MW set to connect as soon as they can build. This is part of multiple gigawatts of capacity set to be released for projects in 2024.
The connection offers have been facilitated through the Technical Limits process, leveraging data from UK Power Networks’ DERMS platform to safely connect more generation to the network. This addresses challenges faced by customers due to constraints on the national transmission system, with some projects facing up to a 15-year wait for connection.
Projects accepted include a 98MW solar farm in the East of England and a 100MW combined storage and solar site in the South East, totaling 836MW for 25 projects. UK Power Networks’ proactive engagement with developers is being praised for its role in advancing projects that contribute to the UK’s progress towards net zero and energy security.
