During the IEA’s 9th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency in Nairobi, Kenya, speakers emphasized the importance of recalibrating the conversation around energy efficiency in the path to net zero. They discussed how energy efficiency can empower local economies and create green jobs in Africa, highlighting urbanization as a key opportunity for African states.
Nasra Nanda, CEO of the Kenya Green Building Society, emphasized the impact of energy efficiency on health, well-being, and infrastructure in informal settlements. She stressed the need to view energy efficiency solutions as bridging a gap between poverty, dignity, and empowerment. Nanda illustrated how cities in Africa can be key players in implementing energy efficiency measures, especially in countries like Kenya where residential buildings are significant energy consumers.
Corinna Enders, CEO of the German Energy Agency, highlighted the challenges faced in promoting energy efficiency in Germany, including a lack of awareness. She emphasized the importance of raising awareness among the public to mobilize support for energy efficiency initiatives. Enders also discussed the need for a clear regulatory framework, financing programs, and market-oriented measures to address the challenges posed by energy efficiency. She suggested that digitalization could play a role in increasing energy efficiency, but data concerns need to be addressed.
