Japanese energy company Tokyo Gas is shifting its focus towards alternative fuels such as e-methane and hydrogen, as well as renewables, in its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The company plans to achieve 50% carbon neutrality in local gas and power operations by 2040, utilizing alternative fuels and offshore wind power. Tokyo Gas aims to reduce total CO2 emissions by 20% by 2030 and 60% by 2040, ultimately reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
Part of Tokyo Gas’s plans involve ramping up the production of e-methane, which is produced from green hydrogen and CO2, by the end of the decade. The company also intends to power its thermal power plants across Japan using hydrogen. Despite these efforts towards decarbonization, natural gas will remain a key element of Japan’s energy mix according to Tokyo Gas President Shinichi Sasayama.
Japan has recently prioritized offshore wind as a crucial component of its national decarbonization strategy, aiming to develop 10GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 45GW by 2040. British power company SSE’s joint venture Japanese unit, SSE Pacifico, has also announced plans to build 6GW of offshore wind capacity in Japan. These developments align with Japan’s push towards renewable energy sources and reduced reliance on traditional fossil fuels.
