US regional transmission system operators collaborate on study to enhance interregional transfer capability

MISO and PJM, two regional transmission system operators, are collaborating on an informational interregional transfer capability study planned for the second half of 2024. The study aims to identify potential opportunities for transmission enhancements along the seam shared by the two regions, driven by input from OPSI, OMS, and MGA.

Increasing transfer capability between regions can support grid resilience, especially in the face of extreme weather events and the growth of renewable generation with intermittent output. Both organisations have a history of working together to address operational and planning challenges, and the study will focus on addressing near-term needs and creating a model for future studies.

The study will involve exploring opportunities for joint transmission analysis, coordinated modeling, and leveraging planning processes to promote reliability and resiliency through holistic transmission planning. The findings will be shared with the Interregional Planning Stakeholder Advisory Committee after the study’s conclusion in early 2025.

The collaboration between MISO and PJM highlights the importance of interregional planning and coordination in addressing grid challenges and ensuring reliability for ratepayers. By working together, the two RTOs aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of their transmission systems.
