1. Google introduced new AI summaries in search results using Gemini AI.
2. The AI Overviews feature is now automatically enabled for users in the U.S.
3. Users can turn off AI Overviews by selecting the Web tab or changing search engine settings.
Google has introduced new AI summaries in search results as part of a generative AI update called Gemini. These AI Overviews automatically answer questions by pulling information from the web. The Search Generative Experience (SGE) experiment began in May last year and has expanded to over 120 countries. While there is no dedicated off button for Google’s AI Overviews, users can turn them off by using the Web tab in search results or by setting up a new search engine in Chrome settings.
To turn off Google’s AI Overviews, users can select the More tab next to Images, News, Videos, and click on Web from the dropdown menu. Another option is to create a new search engine in Chrome settings by entering the URL with %s in place of query. Once the new search engine is created, users can make it the default search engine to direct all queries to Google’s web search tab.
These changes will help users avoid seeing AI summaries in their search results. However, the workarounds do not currently function on Chrome on Android or iOS. Users can use a different mobile browser, such as Firefox, to access the web search tab. Overall, Google’s AI Overviews offer a new way to search and access information, but users have the option to customize their search experience based on their preferences.
