InfraVia Completes Acquisition of Giga Storage, a Dutch/Belgian Developer

1. Giga Storage has a pipeline of 2GW of BESS projects in the Netherlands and Belgium.
2. The company’s focus has shifted to Belgium due to a more storage-friendly policy and market environment.
3. InfraVia has acquired Giga Storage, with plans to install multiple GWs of energy storage power in Europe in the coming years.

Giga Storage has built a pipeline of 2GW of battery energy storage system projects in the Netherlands and Belgium. The company recently commissioned the largest BESS in the Netherlands at 24MW/48MWh, but has shifted its focus to Belgium due to its more storage-friendly policy and market environment. Projects in Belgium include separate 300MW/1,200MWh and 600MW/2,400MWh BESS, with the latter recently approved for construction.

InfraVia, a large investment firm, has welcomed Giga Storage into its family, highlighting the importance of BESS in decarbonizing the European power market. Giga Storage’s CEO, Ruud Nijs, aims to have multiple GWs of installed energy storage power in Europe in the coming years. Improved grid connection and grid fee arrangements could reduce opex costs for operators, encouraging more deployments.

The acquisition of Giga Storage by InfraVia is part of a trend where large investment firms in the UK and Germany are buying BESS developer-operators. This trend was explored in a recent analysis piece. The partnership between Giga Storage and InfraVia reflects the growing importance of BESS in the energy storage market and the push towards decarbonization in Europe.
