The Air Force has been using its workhorse transport planes, such as the C-17 Globemaster III and MC-130J Commando II, in a new role as bombers. These aircraft traditionally aid in the strategic and rapid delivery of fuel, supplies, and personnel via airdrop. The initiative to use these planes as bombers required fewer modifications and training, making them ideal for the role. The MC-130J, in particular, has impressive capabilities, such as climbing 28,000 feet with a 42,000 payload and a range of 3,000 miles. The aircraft can carry as many long-range weapons as a B-52 bomber. The C-17, with a payload capacity of nearly 171,000 pounds, can transport armored vehicles, trucks, trailers, and airdrop more than 100 paratroopers and their equipment, making it a versatile asset in military operations. This plane can also carry three times as many long-range precision munitions as a B-52 bomber. Overall, utilizing transport planes as bombers allows for rapid deployment of firepower and effects in various situations, providing added flexibility and capability to the Air Force.
