Hitachi Rail introduces new long-distance hybrid battery trains in Italy

– Hitachi Rail unveils first long-distance hybrid battery train for Trenitalia
– Train to cut carbon emissions by 83%
– Part of wider €1.23 billion ‘Blues’ framework agreement with Trenitalia and Hitachi Rail

Hitachi Rail has introduced its first long-distance hybrid battery train, set to reduce carbon emissions by 83% when it starts operating later this year. The train, the first of seven for Trenitalia, will serve routes between Calabria, Basilicata, and Puglia, using innovative hybrid technology to draw power from battery, electric, hybrid, and diesel sources. This hybrid driving mode allows for energy recovery during deceleration and braking, significantly cutting carbon emissions compared to diesel-powered trains.

Luca D’Aquila, COO of Hitachi Rail Group, described the intercity battery train as sustainable and innovative, providing improved safety, comfort, and environmental benefits for passengers. The fleet features an advanced air conditioning system that adjusts consumption based on passenger numbers, along with enhanced bike stations and ample luggage capacity. Capable of reaching speeds up to 160km/h with smooth acceleration, these new trains are part of a larger agreement worth €1.23 billion between Trenitalia and Hitachi Rail, focusing on modernizing Italy’s train fleet.

As part of the ‘Blues’ framework agreement, the intercity battery trains can operate on electrified and non-electrified lines, switching between battery, diesel, and electric power as needed. On non-electrified routes, the train operates emissions-free near stations, using battery power while recharging during operation to reduce NOx emissions and noise pollution. With plans for 135 Blues trains to run across multiple regions in Italy, this initiative aims to enhance sustainability and efficiency in the country’s transport sector.
