– Google’s data centre in Mesa, Arizona will be powered by the Sonoran Solar Energy Center
– Surplus energy will be provided to other SRP customers
– SRP and developers have a history of collaborating on renewable energy projects in Arizona, including battery storage systems and solar projects aimed at powering Google’s facilities
Google’s upcoming data centre campus in Mesa, Arizona will be powered by the Sonoran Solar Energy Center, with any surplus energy to be provided to other customers of the Salt River Project (SRP) utility. This project is the latest in a series of collaborations between SRP and developers, including the recent launch of a 100MW battery storage system in Pinal County. Both companies have also worked on other renewables projects in Arizona to support Google’s facilities.
In addition to Google, other tech companies like Meta and Ørsted have also secured power purchase agreements with SRP to power their data centres using solar and battery storage projects in Arizona. This reflects a broader trend towards renewable energy in the tech industry, with utilities like SRP aiming to double their power resources in the next decade through the addition of energy storage capacity.
Developer Plus Power has also secured financing for two projects in Arizona, including the Sierra Estrella battery energy storage system. Construction on these projects began in April, indicating continued growth in the energy storage sector. The Energy Storage Summit USA, hosted by Solar Media, will feature industry leaders discussing ways to accelerate the market for energy storage in the country.
