1. Nuveen Infrastructure and Exus Renewables will co-develop 800MW of battery storage projects in southern Italy.
2. The projects will be located in the Puglia region and will use Alfen’s The Battery Elements battery storage system.
3. Construction on the first projects in the portfolio is planned to begin in Q4 2026, with the goal of supporting Italy’s renewable energy transition and clean energy targets.
Nuveen Infrastructure and Exus Renewables have formed a partnership to develop 800MW of battery storage projects in southern Italy, with each company co-developing a portfolio of 400MW. The projects will be located in the Puglia region and will consist of four standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, each with a capacity of 100MW. The projects will be developed by an undisclosed Italian developer specializing in battery storage systems using Alfen’s Battery Elements technology.
Construction on the first projects is scheduled to begin in Q4 2026. Francesco Cacciabue from Nuveen Infrastructure highlighted the importance of battery technology in supporting renewable energy generation by managing intermittency and associated price fluctuations. The partnership aims to provide strong returns for investors while supporting clean energy targets in Italy and Europe.
Italy has been identified as a top market for battery storage investments in Europe, with a goal of 9GW battery capacity by 2030. Exus Renewables sees this partnership as a strategic move to expand its presence in the Italian market and establish a development platform for future growth and innovation. The meticulous approach to project development with secured land rights and grid interconnection reflects a broader vision to establish a pipeline of BESS projects across Europe. This collaboration follows Nuveen Infrastructure’s entry into the energy storage market in 2023 with a 30MW project in Finland.
