SSE and Bord na Móna collaborate on onshore wind venture in Ireland

1. SSE and Bord na Móna formed a joint venture to deliver up to 800MW of new onshore wind energy in Ireland.
2. The wind portfolio could potentially generate enough clean energy for 500,000 homes annually and offset 500,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
3. The companies plan to invest more than €1bn over the next decade in developing new wind projects on Bord na Móna lands in Ireland.

Scottish energy company SSE and Irish state-owned energy company Bord na Móna have joined forces to deliver up to 800MW of new onshore wind energy in Ireland, with a potential investment of over €1bn. This wind portfolio could generate electricity for 500,000 homes and offset 500,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. SSE Renewables, a subsidiary of SSE, will invest €50m for a 50% stake in the development. The companies aim to accelerate the delivery of vital onshore wind projects in Ireland, supporting regional economies and jobs while contributing to the country’s climate action goals for 2030.

The joint venture includes three pre-planning development projects in Offaly, Tipperary, and on the Laois-Offaly border, which could deliver around 250MW of new renewable energy. They also plan to develop an additional 550MW of onshore wind energy in the future. Planning consent, market access, and grid connections will be crucial for the projects, with final investment decisions made before construction. SSE Renewables will fund development up to the planning consent phase, with equal funding shared thereafter. Recently, SSE Renewables began construction on the Jubera onshore wind farm in Spain, marking their entry into the Spanish market.
