Google initially planned to make its on-device Gemini AI exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro due to “hardware limitations,” but has now announced that a lightweight version of the software, Gemini Nano, will be available on both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The difference in RAM between the two devices — 12GB in the Pixel 8 Pro and 8GB in the Pixel 8 — was cited as the reason for initially excluding the base model.
Google’s VP of devices and software services, Seang Chau, explained that the additional memory in the Pixel 8 Pro makes it easier to enable Gemini Nano, ensuring smooth performance of non-AI functionalities. Google plans to make Gemini Nano available for Pixel 8 through a developer option, requiring users to understand the potential impact on user experience before enabling the feature.
While most Android devices currently have 8 or 12GB of RAM, recent advancements in generative AI technologies may require smartphones to have higher memory capacities in the future. Android Authority’s testing indicates that 8-12GB RAM is ideal for current smartphone usage, with 16GB being considered excessive. However, the rise of consumer-facing generative AI applications could push smartphone manufacturers to increase RAM capacities to accommodate these new technologies.
