Sunrun has connected over 16,200 customers’ solar + storage systems to support California’s electrical grid during hot summer months. The CalReady power plant will supply critical energy to communities in order to reduce costs and prevent power emergencies. Sunrun’s Peak Power Rewards program supplied up to 32 MW of power to PG&E last year, and this summer is expected to double that capacity.
Sunrun CEO Mary Powell stated that customers are key to creating a cleaner, more affordable energy future. Enrolled batteries from aggregators will stabilize the grid and reduce the risk of blackouts. Sunrun customers will be compensated for sharing their stored solar energy with the grid.
The Demand Side Grid Support program, administered by the California Energy Commission, aims to boost energy supplies during extreme events. Sunrun is the largest aggregator in the program and will monitor and dispatch customers’ batteries hassle-free. CalReady will support California’s grid during peak hours from May to October.
Sunrun’s virtual power plant is valuable due to its scale, speed, and capacity. It will provide supplemental energy to the grid and communities up to 35 times over five months. Customer enrollment in CalReady is ongoing, with participation expected to grow.
