The first-ever American-built, owned, and crewed offshore wind service operations vessel (SOV) has been christened, marking a major milestone for America’s offshore wind energy supply chain. The ECO EDISON, built by more than 600 workers across three U.S. Gulf States, will support Ørsted’s Northeast Wind Farms. U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and U.S. Congressman Troy A. Carter joined senior executives to celebrate the completion of this vessel, which will play a key role in enabling domestic energy production and strengthening America’s energy independence.
The ECO EDISON is the first U.S.-flagged offshore wind SOV, symbolizing major financial investments into U.S. ports, manufacturing, workforce, and domestic energy by Ørsted. This vessel will support Ørsted and Eversource’s South Fork Wind, Revolution Wind, and Sunrise Wind projects, showcasing Ørsted’s commitment to building a new domestic offshore energy supply chain. The vessel, powered by Cat® 3512E engines from Caterpillar Marine, emphasizes the vast opportunities offshore wind offers existing American manufacturers and shipyards.
The ECO EDISON will serve as a floating, year-round homebase for 60 American offshore wind turbine technicians, showcasing the Gulf Coast’s role in the growing U.S. offshore wind supply chain. With contributions from Gulf Coast companies and deep expertise from industries like ECO, the ECO EDISON represents a step towards enhancing American energy production. Ørsted’s various projects are creating jobs and driving economic development across dozens of states, with the Gulf of Mexico region playing a crucial role.
